NBC Orders a Sequel to 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'
by Zack WellsFairy tales seem to be very trendy these days! With shows like “Once Upon a Time” and “Grimm” drawing in the viewers and ratings, it is only natural that NBC wants to get in on that action as well.
The NBC ordered pilot of “Wonderland” is set to be a sequel to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There”.
This time around, the series is set in modern times. A new character, Clara, agrees go to Wonderland, and wage war against the malevolent reigning Queen Alice.
“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” creator Anthony Zuiker is attached as executive producer, and Whit Anderson penned the pilot.
However, this is not the only new television series based on a sequel to Carroll’s works. The CW is developing a series called “Wunderland”, a crime drama set in modern-day Los Angeles, from the minds of McG and Chad Hodge. But, while the NBC pilot has been order, the CW’s has not yet.
Astute readers might also recognize the sequel premise, as Disney released their own take on a sequel to Carroll’s works in 2010, the Tim Burton directed “Alice in Wonderland”.
This is not the first time two rival networks produced similar projects at the same time. The CW and ABC both tried their take on a “Beauty and the Beast” inspired project.
With the media market so saturated with fairy tale inspired spin-offs, do latecomers “Wonderland” and “Wunderland” really stand a chance, or has that ship already sailed?
