NBC Considers 'Will & Grace' Reboot

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC is in the early stages of negotiations to produce a limited-run revival of the early-2000s sitcom Will & Grace. The idea is in its infancy, however, and those involved have not made any official announcement that the project is definitely a go.

Interest in the series picked up earlier in the fall when the cast reunited to film an election-themed scene in support of presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. When the short video attracted significant attention online, the idea of a full-fledged revival reportedly gained traction at the network. As of yet, none of the series' cast has signed on to a new project, but some of them, including stars Debra Messing and Eric McCormack, have admitted that they're open to the idea.

Messing is currently without a TV job after her series The Mysteries of Laura was cancelled in the spring. McCormack is currently starring in Travelers, a sci-fi series produced by Netflix.

If the reboot happens, it won't necessarily happen on NBC. The network's recent reboot of its Heroes series was a ratings disaster, and given that Will & Grace isn't available for streaming on any major on-demand video services, it's not clear if the 10-year-old series has been able to maintain a dynamic fan base in the decade it's been off the air.

The series is popular in syndication on broadcast TV, though, and a limited revival might be attractive to a streaming service such as Netflix, which has a track record of reviving long-defunct series. It's important to note, however, that Netflix's most high-profile revivals - Fuller House, Arrested Development, Gilmore Girls - have been drawn from titles that were already part of the service's content library.
