My Big Fat Sequel: 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' Returns
by Shannon KeirnanIt was 2002 when "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" snuck into theaters and became one of the highest-grossing independent films of all time.
And now, it's back.
Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the original, is bringing back the Portokalos family. After four years of writing the script, the sequel is finally in development.
Vardalos was holding off until completion of her book tour for "Instant Mom," the account of her 10-year struggle to become a parent, to fully commit to the project, but now the wheels are starting to turn.
"The entire 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' family is invited back and we'll have a few new guests," she says. "You will not see my [real life] daughter in the movie - she's a minor and we keep her life private, but she will be on set with the family, eating their way through craft services."
Few details are out yet regarding the plot, but word is that it might involve another wedding. Vardalos does say the film does not yet have a director planned, depsite reports that she would be running the show.
"I don't want to direct because I like an impartial set of eyeballs watching and editing. Plus, I'd like to become a better actor, and that's only possible with someone prodding me."
Vardalos adds that one goal she has for the film, along with another film in development with Paramount ("Leftovers"), is to create differing roles for acresses.
"The movie business is still obtusely standing on a giant sinkhole of woman-ignoring idiocy," she rightly points out.
So, will you be hitting the theaters to watch Ian (John Corbett) and Toula, now parents, navigate their big fat Greek life?
