'The Mummy' Has a Mediocre Thursday
by EG
Universal's monster movie The Mummy dug up $2.7 million in late night shows in 3,015 theaters on Thursday night.
The film, which stars Tom Cruise and is the first film in a planned Dark Universe franchise centering on the studio's classic monster character, is tracking to earn around $35 million from 4,000 theaters in its domestic debut, putting intense pressure on the movie's foreign performance.
Compared to other recent Cruise films, The Mummy’s preview number tops Jack Reacher:Never Go Back’s $1.3 million in Oct. 2016 on a way to a $22.9 million debut, but does not reach the heights of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’s $4 million in previews in 2015 on its way to its $55.5 million opening.
Wonder Woman, Warner Bros.' hit superhero film helmed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, should easily top the domestic box office once again this weekend. It could earn as much as $50 million after opening to $103.3 million last weekend. The film earned an additional $9.2 million Thursday for a new domestic tally of $147.9 million.
