MTV Adjusts Video Music Awards Start Time For Obama Address
by Sean ComerGolly gee. Is there anything President Obama can't do?
One day, we shall all sing songs of the stroke he wields. He is our Slayer of Bin Laden! He is the "First Gay President!" Mover of the MTV Video Music Awards to an earlier time!
OK, so that last one isn't exactly a power move on Obama's part. That, Deadline reports, is a conscious decision on MTV's part so the the VMAs won't receive a ratings beating from the Democratic National Convention, also airing Sept. 6. As a result, the show has been bumped from its usual 9-11 PM ET/PT airing to an 8-10 PM slot. The DNC didn't issue a comment on the move by MTV. The convention is set to run Sept. 3-6.
Despite the move back an hour, there's still no indication when exactly Obama will take the Charlotte, NC stage with his speech. According to Deadline, that's traditionally slotted for around 10 PM EST. Therefore, he would ideally begin his presentation right around the time the VMAs would be calling it a night, as opposed to about midway into the show.
In similar move in 2008, the NFL moved its NBC regular-season opener from Sept. 6-Sept. 5 to accommodate the DNC proceedings.
Emanating this year from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the VMAs don't yet have an announced host. For all anyone knows, the network could ask MTV Movie Awards host Russell Brand to pull double-duty. Last year's show set an all-time high for the awards with 12.4 million viewers tuning in to watching performances by Beyonce, Adele, Bruno Mars and others.
