Moviegoer Maced at LA Theater for Asking Woman to Stop Texting
by Andy NeuenschwanderNobody likes a movie texter. But in Los Angeles tonight, it was a texter who threw a tantrum.
TCL Chinese Theatres in Los Angeles was hosting an American Film Institute screening of "Mr. Turner," the biopic about British painter J.M.W. Turner that premiered in Cannes.
During the screening, a man tapped on the shoulder of a woman in front of him who had been texting on her smartphone. According to witnesses, he had asked her politely several times to stop before tapping her shoulder.
At that point, the woman reportedly stood up, turned and confronted the man, shining her phone's flashlight into his face and yelling at him. Others asked her to stop, but at that point she pulled a can of mace out of her purse and maced the man in the face.
Sources say the man left the theater and the woman went back to watching the movie (which was not stopped by the theater's projectionists despite the commotion) until she was escorted out by security 20 minutes later.
As of now, it's not clear whether the woman was arrested or charges were pressed on either side. An AFI rep said that there was "an incident" and that it "has been handled, and everyone is okay."
Moral of the story: get the ushers to take care of texters for you.
