More Vampires for 'Let Me In' Director as 'The Passage' Movie Comes to Light

If directors can be typecast, it looks like Matt Reeves is becoming "that vampire guy."

Reeves, who directed the vampire thriller "Let Me In" (based on the Swedish movie "Let the Right One In"), has been tapped to develop and direct an adaptation of the novel The Passage. The book, which was written by Justin Cronin, made a big splash on the literary scene last summer, and was very well-received by both critics and readers.

The tone will be a bit different (actually, a lot different) from "Let Me In." "The Passage" is set in a post-apocalyptic future after a virus has spread, causing humans to be transformed into vampires. It seems as though the movie aims to be what "I Am Legend" should have been: an apocalyptic vampire movie that is less about the action and more about the human condition.

Cronin has said himself that the vampires in his book are just a "vehicle" for the story, and it's really about the bonds between parents and children, as well as themes of "love, honor, courage, valor."

Ridley Scott will produce "The Passage," and a writer will be brought in to work with Reeves on a rewrite of John Logan's ("Gladiator," "The Last Samurai") script. In addition to buying the rights for the first novel, Fox 2000 has also purchased the rights to up to two possible sequels.
