Monkee Micky Dolenz Digs 'Breaking Bad' Bite Of 'Goin' Down'

Monkee Micky Dolenz Digs 'Breaking Bad' Bite Of 'Goin' Down' (WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS from this past Sunday's episode of AMC's "Breaking Bad.")

Former Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz didn't see a dime when AMC's "Breaking Bad" producers copped a snippet from a Pre-Fab Four favorite this past Sunday during a pivotal moment. Dolenz told The Hollywood Reporter he wants for nothing from creator Vince Gilligan and Co., all the same.

He's just tickled to have helped make the moment.

"'Goin' Down' has nothing to do with drugs, obviously," Dolenz told THR. "And I certainly don't condone meth - that is nasty stuff that kills a lot of people and ruins a lot of lives. ... On the other hand, I like the TV show, it's very well-made. ... And no, I didn't make a penny.

"The record company controls the licensing and mechanicals for all the material that you do," the '60s pop star and actor explained concerning how little sway he hold over the 1967 "Daydream Believer" B-side, or any other of the Monkees tunes. "In movies and TV they don't even have to ask, unless you wrote the song. Like I had no idea 'I'm a Believer' was going to be in 'Shrek.'"

Yet Sunday night, there it was - one of those infrequent moments when the series makes incidental use of a pop soundtrack. The double-timed vocals of the track were paired with a montage of chemistry as virtuoso meth chef Walter White (three-time Emmy winner Bryan Cranston) paired with protégé Todd (Jesse Plemons) to muscle through an all-night cook.

Dolenz wasn't even afforded the luxury of hearing his vocals Walter and Todd's handiwork as the montage aired, alas. He was touring with his solo show, but the Monkees online fandom network lit up his Facebook praising the music-and-moment pairing.

"Like they say, any publicity is good publicity - just spell the name right," Dolenz quipped.
