'Mom' Pilot Recap
by Shannon KeirnanWaitress Christy (Anna Faris) has a breakdown while pouring wine for her customers at a fancy restaurant. She weeps while passing out birthday cake to an elderly patron, and retreats to the kitchen to cry.
In the kitchen, anal Chef Rudy (French Stewart) instructs his employees. Manager Gabriel (Nathan Corddry) comes back to tell Christy he’s getting a lot of complaints. He tells her to take the rest of the night off, but she tells him she has to care for her children. She was insulted by one of her customers... he called her a “good waitress.” Being a good waitress was never the plan. She wanted to be a psychologist. Of course, she’d have to graduate from high school first.
Christy goes home, listening to her inspirational tape. She sees a man sneaking out of her house.
“My daughter’s an easy lay, and it’s not my fault,” she chants.
She goes in, and her daughter Violet pretends that she was just woken up. Christy sits her down for a talk but messes it all up.
Christy goes to get her son, and puts him to bed. He asks if she will go to his talent show tomorrow, but she has to work. He tells her he’s no good anyway.
There is a knock at the door - Gabriel. Christy kisses him and he asks if she’s feeling better. Christy hears her son again and shoves Gabriel into the bushes.
Christy rushes to the talent show, but missed it. The janitor tells her there was no talent show. She goes to Roscoe’s class. He says he was wrong about the day, and Christy mutters that she needs a drink.
She goes to A.A. to talk. She has been sober 118 days. She doesn’t want to turn into her mother, she admits. She sits down, and the woman behind her (Allison Janney) tells her she is too old to blame her problems on her mother.
“Hi, Mom,” Christy says.
The two go out for lunch. Bonnie tells the waiter she and her daughter haven’t spoken in a long time and asks what they should eat. The waiter recommends pie.
Bonnie tells her daughter that A.A. is turning her life around. Bonnie says that Christy’s daughter Violet talks to her, and says that Christy is hanging on by her fingernails. Christy tells Bonnie to stay away from their family.
Christy goes to work to talk to Gabriel, but his wife comes in and interrupts them. She goes home, where the father of her kids, Baxter, is playing video games with Roscoe. He wants to pay his overdue child support by borrowing money from her to buy and sell drugs. The shirtless man comes out of Violet’s room again.
Gabriel comes to try and plead with Christy but she shuts the door on him and yells at her daughter. Violet says she and the shirtless guy, Luke, have been together for a year, but she didn’t notice until she quit drinking. Violet refuses to forgive her until Christy forgives her own mother.
Christy reluctantly calls Bonnie and tells her she forgives her for all the terrible things she did while she was growing up. Violet tells her it’s not that easy.
“Oh, come on. LIKE ME!”
Christy comes home after work to find Bonnie and Violet in the kitchen together. Bonnie came over and made a hot dinner. Bonnie is excited to start over with her daughter, but then her date - the waiter - comes over. Bonnie rushes out but remembers to come back in and tell Christy that Violet thinks she may be pregnant.
