Rumor has it that Vergara and her fiance, Nick Loeb, have a baby brewing… through a surrogate! Reportedly, the “Modern Family” star has asked a very close friend (her “healthiest” and “closest”) to carry a child for her.

A source close to the star revealed earlier, “The child will be biologically Sofia and Nick’s baby… A procedure has taken place, and Sofia and Nick will find out in a few weeks if it was successful, if the surrogate is pregnant, and if they will become parents.”

The source added, “A baby is something they’ve both wanted for a while, particularly Nick, who has been pushing for it. He is a little uneasy that the surrogate is Sofia’s close friend, but is very excited about becoming a father.”

Is the baby on the way responsible for Vergara skipping the Oscars two weeks ago? Possibly. Though the beauty claimed she was ill with the flu, it might have been more serious than that. Allegedly the surrogate experienced a miscarriage scare, and Vergara and Loeb spent the night with her in the hospital before it was determined that all was well.

"After several hours, it was determined that the baby was fine, and so was the surrogate mom," another source said. “Sofia thanked God that everything was okay.”

According to the National Enquirer,the couple decided to reproduce via surrogate because of Loeb’s concern about his girlfriend’s figure and career. Since this is from the National Enquirer, one can take it with a grain of salt… although Loeb isn’t known for being a real sensitive, stand-up kind of man, so it may not be far off.

Vergara’s reps have yet to comment on the rumors. Vergara already has a 20-year old son (if you can believe it).
