'Might Morphin Power Rangers' Live-Action Movies Are In the Works
by Andy NeuenschwanderIt's Morphin' time!
All you 90's kids out there will be excited to hear about this plan: Lionsgate is teaming up with Saban to bring not just one, but a series of live-action "Power Rangers" movies to the big screen.
The new movies will "re-envision" the classic kid's show, and that's not at all surprising. The campy, over-the-top tone of the original "Power Rangers" or even the slightly more epic "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" wouldn't quite fit into today's cinematic world of gritty superhero flicks. Chances are we'll end up with something along the lines of Michael Bay's upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot, giving nods to the source material while veering off in ways that will make the movie fit in with the current trends.
The good news for fans is that the brand is in good hands with Lionsgate. The company has brought "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent" to fans in a way that works on screen and for a broader audience, but still stays very true to the source material. "Divergent" in particular was about as faithful an adaptation as you can get from Hollywood.
"Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level,” Saban noted in a press release “They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from 'The Hunger Games' to 'Twilight' and 'Divergent.'"
You might also want to thank the "Transformers" franchise and "Pacific Rim" for this: Giant fighting robots are trendy at the moment, and the Megazord should fit right in.
