'Metal Gear' Movie Adaptation is a Go! Here's 5 Things We Want to See
by Andy NeuenschwanderThe floodgate may have been opened with the "Assassin's Creed" adaptation, or maybe it's the fact that there have been roughly 50 "Resident Evil" movies to date... either way, a "Metal Gear" movie is next on the list.
Yes, Kojima-ites, IGN is reporting that a "Metal Gear" movie adaptation has been announced. Columbia Pictures will be the studio backing the project, and Avi Arad, who produced "X-Men" and "Iron Man," among others, will produce.
It was inevitable that a "Metal Gear" movie be made eventually: after all, the series of video games is one of the most cinematic and story-driven franchises to date, in some ways acting as a grandaddy to the cinematic-driven stealth games of today, like, say, "Assassin's Creed."
There are very few details as of yet, so there's no word on whether the movie will start at the beginning and reflect the events of the original "Metal Gear" (which was released back in 1987), or whether it will go all the way back to the prequel "Snake Eater" or perhaps start with "Metal Gear Solid," which popularized and revolutionized the series when it landed on the Playstation.
Assuming it starts with "Metal Gear," the adventure will center on an espionage operative by the codename of Solid Snake, who must disarm a new and deadly weapon called Metal Gear.
In any case, here are five things we really want to see from this movie:
1.) At some point, Snake has to hide under a cardboard box, right?
2.) We can only hope that the alert sound, the sound that causes gamers heart attacks after years of Pavlovian conditioning, will be used.
3.) Some actual stealth work. It would be easy to make a movie that just has Snake running in, guns blazing, but so much of the series is based on stealth, and actually rewards it. Plus, even though it's quiet, super-cool stealthy stuff can be fun to watch, like when James Bond does it. Snake is just Bond with a bandana and fewer social graces.
4.) Some of the crazier villains, in particular Psycho Mantis from "Metal Gear Solid." In the game, this guy could "read your mind" through your controller, so you had to actually plug it into the 2nd player slot in order to beat him. He would also turn the screen black, making it look like you accidentally changed the video input on your TV. It was a total mindf*ck, and if they could translate that to the movie, it could be amazing. Imagine if a villain broke the fourth wall like that, and made it look like the projector stopped working in the theater or something?
5.) Some sort of reference to "Escape from New York," which features Snake Plissken, the character upon which Solid Snake was based. They reference it in the video games, so a nod in the movie would be pretty good too.
Sound off, gamers: what do you want to see in the "Metal Gear" movie?
