Meryl Streep Defends Herself Against Rose McGowan

Charmed star Rose McGowan stirred up controversy over the weekend with a tweet that implied Meryl Streep is guilty of covering for disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. McGowan claimed that Streep and other actresses had been silent while Weinstein embarked on a decades-long program of sexual harassment and assault. Streep denied the implications on Monday, claiming that she never knew what Weinstein was doing to other women.

McGowan denies that she accused Streep of knowing about the abuse, although it's not clear what she was accusing Streep of being "silent" about if that's the case. McGowan apparently later deleted the controversial tweet.

Meryl Streep has responded to a tweet by Rose McGowan blasting the Oscar winner for working with disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein.

In a statement to Page Six, Streep said in part that, “It hurt to be attacked by [McGowan] . . . but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the ’90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others.”

McGowan has claimed that Weinstein raped her, among other women, while Weinstein has denied the accusations.

Streep, who appeared in Weinstein-distributed film such as “The Iron Lady” and “August: Osage County,” added, “I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape . . . I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.”
