Melissa McCarthy Coming Back to Gilmore Girls
by EG
The on-again-off-again quest to get Melissa McCarthy to reprise her Gilmore Girls role for the series' revival on Netflix is on again, this time definitively. McCarthy announced this week that she will indeed be back to play Sookie in the revival of the show, and that announcement was a giant fan-pleaser.
McCarthy was originally omitted from the list of original cast members returning for the revival, but it turned out that her omission was a misunderstanding. McCarthy said that she'd never been asked to participate in the project, and series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino admitted that she assumed that the busy McCarthy wouldn't be available. McCarthy then said that by the time the misunderstanding was finally sorted out, she actually was too busy to participate. Then Sherman-Palladino said that she'd be willing to write McCarthy into a scene if the actress could be on the show's set for even a day.
The public back-and-forth reached a happy conclusion this week when McCarthy was apparently able to spare a small amount of her time. She announced on Thursday's Ellen show that a last-minute agreement had been reached, and she'd definitely be joining the revival.
Don't expect her role to be a big one, though. Sherman-Palladino left open the possibility that Sookie's appearance could be a cameo in a single scene. Given McCarthy's full schedule these days, that seems to be the most likely outcome.
