Mel Gibson Officially Charged with Misdemeanor Battery

After months of investigation, Gibson has finally been charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend.

According to Extra, Gibson is expected to accept a plea agreement, which means he will not see any jail time. Instead, he will perform 16 hours of community service with philanthropic organization, Mending Kids International. He was also undergo 52 weeks of counseling and will not receive credit for counseling that has accrued since January.

Gibson’s next film, the Jodie Foster-directed dramedy "The Beaver," which experienced delays throughout the bad press surrounding the star, will be released later this year.

Gibson was set to star in “The Hangover 2,” but was dropped after cast members reportedly complained about the negative publicity.
