Mean Girls Musical on Broadway: It's Going to Happen

She's been talking about it for years, but Tina Fey cranked up the anticipation for a Broadway musical version of her Mean Girls last week by telling the audience of Watch What Happens: Live that the musical is definitely going to happen. Fey's off-hand announcement was short on details, but it offered encouragement that she hasn't given up on the project.

Fey said that the show is "close" to being finished, although it's not there yet, and that she's working on the project with her husband, composer Jeff Richmond. As far as the songs go, Fey says they will be more in the vein of traditional show tunes than pop songs.

The 2004 film Mean Girls was written by Fey based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman. The film, which achieved both box office and critical success, starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams. Fey played a supporting role - that of math teacher Sharon Norbury - but she says that she will not be part of the on-stage class. She also doesn't expect any of the other film cast members to make the transition to the Broadway show.

When pressed for a potential debut date for the show, Fey joked that it should be ready by 2027.
