Maze Runner Accident Seriously Injures Star

Dylan O'Brien, star of The Maze Runner franchise as well as MTV's Teen Wolf, was injured Thursday in an accident on the set of The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third film in the young-adult franchise. Details about the incident are sketchy at this point, but reports suggest that O'Brien was hit by a car during the filming of an action scene and may have suffered multiple broken bones.

The Death Cure is currently filming in Vancouver. Although initial reports said that O'Brien was taken to a local hospital for observation, suggesting that his injuries were minor, a statement issued by the studio said that production on the film will be halted while the actor recovers, a move that would seem to indicate that the injuries are significantly more than minor.

The Death Cure had been set for release in February 2017, although a prolonged recovery by its star could set that date back. The first film in the franchise, 2014's The Maze Runner, was a modest but not unsuccessful performer as YA franchises go, earning a domestic gross of $102 million over the course of its run. The second installment, 2015's The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials didn't do nearly as well, taking in just $82 million.
