Marvel Announces First Black Captain America in Comics Shakeup
by Andy NeuenschwanderMeet your new Captain America!
Following news that the new Thor would be female, Marvel announced another shakeup to their Big Three by revealing the new Captain America on last night's episode of "The Colbert Report."
Marvel CCO Joe Queseda revealed that Sam Wilson, also known as the superhero Falcon, would be taking Cap's Vibranium shield and becoming the new Captain America.
This marks the first time that Marvel's headlining hero has been represented by an African-American. There have been seven different iterations of Captain America in the past.
The timing is good for Marvel, as Falcon just recently made his big-screen debut in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Anthony Mackie, also known for his work in movies like "Million Dollar Baby" and "The Hurt Locker," took on the role.
Sam Wilson will debut as the new Cap in the first issue of "All-New Captain America" which will release this fall. Rumor has it that Marvel has one more big change upcoming for Iron Man, though we're not sure what it is just yet.
As for Falcon, Queseda offered Colbert the job as Captain America's sidekick, and even gave Colbert an artist's rendering. Colbert's suggestion for a new catchphrase: "Why did the Falcon cross the road? For justice, motherf**ker."
We like it. It's catchy.
