'Magnum PI' Sequel to Star Eva Longoria
by EG
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria will produce and star in a sequel series to the 1980s hit Magnum P.I. Longoria will play the daughter of private investigator Thomas Magnum, who was played in the original series by Tom Selleck. The series is in the early stages of development and doesn't yet have a commitment from ABC, the title's home network, beyond the development of a script.
Longoria and fellow producer Ben Spector reportedly settled on Magnum while searching for an old series title that they felt was ripe for reboot. Rather than totally reboot the series and cast Longoria as a new female version of the original character, the pair decided to develop a sequel. In it, Longoria will play Magnum's daughter, who will return to her father's native Hawaii to work, like he did, as a private investigator.
In the original series, Longoria's character, Lily, appeared in four episodes. Lily was raised by her mother, Magnum's ex-wife, and her stepfather. By the end of the series, Lily had been reunited with Magnum, but the future of their relationship was left unresolved by the series' finale.
There's no word as yet whether Longoria will pursue Selleck to reprise his old role in the new series.
