The Mad Hatter Takes the Focus in a 'Once Upon a Time' Spin-Off
by Shannon KeirnanIf “Once Upon a Time” didn’t take you quiet far enough down the rabbit hole, you may be in luck.
ABC is considering taking the Mad Hatter character from the popular fairy tale show and giving him his own spin-off.
Sebastian Stan, however, who plays the unhinged father in “Once Upon a Time,” would not be able to reprise his role—most likely due to commitments on Broadway and in the “Captain America” movies.
The network is looking at presenting the show two different ways—the first would involve a short presentation starring the character (possibly growing into a 13-episode series), or bringing the character back to “Once Upon a Time” in a guest arc that would spin off into the backdoor pilot, in the same manner that CW is presenting “The Originals” from “Vampire Diaries.”
"Once Upon a Time" creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis are both working on a possible Mad Hatter project. If the concept takes off, both will be show runners. The show would most likely premiere in fall of this year.
“Alice in Wonderland” seems to be a popular subject on the small screen lately.
“CSI” creator Anthony Zuiker is developing "Wonderland" for NBC, which will be based on the classic tale and follow Alice several years after she becomes queen of Wonderland.
Lionsgate is also working on an “Alice in Wonderland” series focusing on Alice’s daughter.
The CW also has “Wunderland,” a cop drama where Alice plays a detective—go figure.
What do you think of the spin-off? Would you watch the Mad Hatter on his own show?
