Weekend Box Office: 'Logan' Has Near-Record Debut

There was no surprise that the superhero movie Logan was the top-grossing movie of last weekend. The movie's outstanding box-office performance was, however, beyond anyone's expectations. As it outpaced even the most optimistic predictions for its debut, the film flirted with more than one box-office record.

Logan took in $85.3 million for the weekend, out-earning the second-place film, Get Out, but nearly $60 million. Conservative estimates of the movie's opening-weekend take were around $65 million, and the best-case scenario seemed to be somewhere around $75 million.

Logan's opening is by far the biggest of 2017 so far. That title was previously held by The Lego Batman Movie, which took in $53 million when it debuted in February.

Logan was also near the top of the list for opening weekends of R-rated movies. That list is topped by Deadpool, with $132 million, and Logan comes in fourth.

Logan is also in fourth place among all movies that have opened in March. The biggest March opening belongs to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, with $166 million.

Logan will face competition next weekend from Kong: Skull Island and the weekend after that from the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast starring Emma Watson.
