'How To Live With Your Parents For The Rest of Your Life' 'How to Get Off the Couch' Recap
by Shannon KeirnanPolly’s smoothie making wakes her parents. She is making an energy shake. She tells them she is going to run a 5K.
She says she remembered what an activist she used to be. Julian comes in. Polly has asked him to train with her, annoying Max. He says he can take Natalie to school in the morning.
In the shower with Elaine, Max says it isn’t a healthy way to conduct a divorce.
Polly puts her socks on outside while she talks herself up about her 5K. Julian interrupts her and throws her shoes away.
“You and I have to stand up to the tyranny of ‘Big Shoe!’”
He makes her run but the gap between her legs is off, so he goes inside to get a block of wood she can clench. Max and Elaine make him sit down with them, and tell him that they’re concerned Polly will not be able to move on to the next phase in her life unless Julian stops letting her lean on him.
Julain goes outside where Polly is prancing barefoot, and says he has to go.
Polly jogs next to Max, but falls, yelling in pain.
On the couch, she dials Julian to take her to the doctor but can’t get a hold of him. She needs someone to help with Natalie while she is stuck on the couch.
Day 2 without Julian… Max is making Natalie lunch. He is mad he can’t make her a peanut butter sandwich because of allergies at school. Elaine dresses Natalie, and gives her a necklace that her grandmother gave her. She explains Heaven to Natalie but it gets complicated. She ends up telling Natalie that she was in Heaven before she was born, and her great grandmother cared for her.
They assume they’re finished, but Polly reminds them they need to physically take her to school. Max theorizes that Polly is subconsciously hobbling herself to get Julian back in her life. They need to take care of her until she is weaned off of him.
Elaine reads a book to the class in Polly’s place. When she is done, Natalie tells her to tell the class about who took care of her in Heaven before she was born… and the whole class has questions.
Max takes Polly to the hospital, where they try to put her in an MRI machine but she continues to escape. Max accuses her of prolonging the episode so Julian can come save her.
2 pills later, Polly goes snoring into the machine.
Elaine and Max are still watching Natalie, but it is sucking the life out of them. Elaine wants to call Julian but Max says they have to wait… until Polly gets off the phone with the doctor. She’ll be off her feet for a few weeks.
They go and find Julian (in a frozen yogurt suit) and beg him to come and help. He says maybe they were right, and it was a wake-up call. Elaine blames Max.
The next week is torture. Natalie wakes them up early and Polly needs to be fed.
At the door, an Indian man is asking for Natalie’s grandma. His son wants to climb back inside his mother and go to where he was raised by the magical cow Elaine made up for his Heaven.
Polly decides to help and gets rid of him. She points out that it is pretty hard to do this without help, right? She explains that Julian told her what happened so she pretended to be more wounded than she was.
Max and Elaine are just thrilled to be off the hook, until Polly tells them they have to apologize to Julian… and she is going to run the 5K and wants their help.
Julian pushes her in a wheelchair. Polly asks if he thinks her parents are right, but he just thinks he’s trying to be around more. She decides it is not healthy after all, and gets up and begins to run… 4K to go.
Polly made it to the end, greeted by her family.
In Natalie’s classroom, the teacher tries to straighten out the issues Elaine has brought up with religion. She has Elaine clarify.
“The thing is, kids… I’m crazy.”
