Live-Action 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie in the Works

Live-Action 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie in the Works This could either go very well, or very poorly.

There's a live-action/CGI "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie in the works, according to THR. Based on the popular Sega games that became billion-dollar franchise, the Sonic movie will combine computer animation from Japanese animation firm Marza Animation Planet with live-action elements.

Van Robichaux and Evan Susser have been tapped to write the project. Considering that both are alumni of the Upright Citizen's Brigade, an improv comedy theater and school founded in part by Amy Poehler, we're likely to see a comedic take on the character. "22 Jump Street" producer Neal Moritz is producing under the Sony banner.

For the few of you unfamiliar with the character, Sonic the Hedgehog was created by Sega as the video game console's answer to Nintendo's Mario. The blue cartoon hedgehog is capable of running at super speeds, and has a cast of colorful sidekicks and villains.

For now, the story is only rumored to feature Sonic and his arch-enemy Dr. Robotnik, so fans of characters like Tails, Knuckles and others might have to wait for the sequel.

If there is a sequel, that is. Video game movies have a pretty poor track record, ranging from the poorly reviewed but at least financially successful ("Resident Evil" series) to the downright terrible ("Bloodrayne" and the classically awful "Super Mario Bros.").

However, with successful movie franchises coming from action figure lines like Transformers and G.I. Joe, one has to wonder if video games might have another shot at the box office in the years to come.
