Listen to Adele's Next Single Release, 'Rumour Has It'
by Sean ComerAdele's phenomenal rise doesn't look like it's stopping for breath.
If it seems like only yesterday she swept all six of her 2012 Grammy nominations in her triumphant return from late-2011 vocal chord surgery . . . well, that's not too far off. It was, after all, just Sunday night. The British chanteusse, though, has named "Rumour Has It" the sequel she hopes will give her a grand-slam fourth hit from her Album of the Year-winning 21. It should be hitting U.S. radio stations right around mid-March, according to Entertainment Weekly.
For such a bare, rootsy-country sounding album as 21, "Rumour Has It" sticks out pleasantly as arguably the most "pop" song of the lot. "Rolling In The Deep" certainly has an undeniable, steady-as-a-clock groove and "Someone Like You" may be one of the last several years' best written and most stirringly sung ballads. But "Rumour Has It" has a sparse, soulful groove that's almost all Adele's husky voice in all its smoky glory, punctuating staccato drums and silky backing vocals.
Not that there was ever a doubt, but it might be the best demonstration yet that she's no one-trick pony. It might make a run at . . . well, "Rolling In The Deep" to be called the defiant break-up song most likely to get you nodding your head through your tears. This one's all about the karma that will come back to get you if you do somebody wrong on your way out a relationship's door.
Give it a listen below, and let us know what you think: will this be a fourth hit alongside "Rolling In The Deep," "Setting Fire In The Rain" and "Someone Like You"? Or is there another deep cut you'd rather hear hitting the airwaves?
Here are the lyrics:
"Rumour Has It"
She, she ain't real,
She ain't gonna be able to love you like I will,
She is a stranger,
You and I have history,
Or don't you remember?
Sure, she's got it all,
But, baby, is that really what you want?
Bless your soul, you've got your head in the clouds,
She made a fool out of you,
And, boy, she's bringing you down,
She made your heart melt,
But you're cold to the core,
Now rumour has it she ain't got your love anymore,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
She, is half your age,
But I'm guessing that's the reason that you stayed,
I heard you've been missing me,
You've been telling people things you shouldn't be,
Like when we creep out and she ain't around,
Haven't you heard the rumours?
Bless your soul, you've got your head in the clouds,
You made a fool out of me,
And, boy, you're bringing me down,
You made my heart melt, yet I'm cold to the core,
But rumour has it I'm the one you're leaving her for,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
All of these words whispered in my ear,
Tell a story that I cannot bear to hear,
Just 'cause I said it, it don't mean that I meant it,
People say crazy things,
Just 'cause I said it, don't mean that I meant it,
Just 'cause you heard it,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
Rumour has it, rumour,
But rumour has it he's the one I'm leaving you for.
