Lindsay Lohan is Back in 'The Canyons'

Lindsay Lohan's latest comeback vehicle, "The Canyons," opened on Friday, but it didn't exactly make a big splash. The theatrical opening was largely a symbolic one—the movie was only playing on one screen at the IFC Center in New York—but the day's box office returns seem to be a bad symbol for Lohan's career.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film took in about $3,300 on opening day. At first glance, that doesn't seem so bad—this week's box-office leader, "2 Guns," grossed just about the same amount per theater—but a high-profile NYC premiere could do better. Consider that Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" took in $102,167 per screen during its NYC/LA opening last weekend.

"The Canyons," which was directed by Paul Schrader ("American Gigolo") and written by Brett Easton Ellis ("American Psycho"), stars Lohan and adult film star James Deen as a movie producer who gets wrapped up in a seedy whirlwind of sex and violence. It is Lohan's first major acting job since a recent stint in rehab and after her critically panned role as Elizabeth Taylor in the made-for-TV movie "Liz & Dick."

IFC Films hedged its bets with "The Canyons," releasing the film on video-on-demand platforms at the same time that it debuted on the big screen. The tepid demand for tickets in NYC, along with the film's unimpressive 24% positive critics' rating on RottenTomatoes.com, make it look as if this is not the comeback Lohan was looking for.
