'Lights Out' Sequel Already Planned

The low-budget horror film Lights Out has only been in theaters a week, but already New Line Cinema has given a green light to a follow up of the surprise hit. The film, which cost less than $4 million to make, managed to take the fifth-place spot in its opening weekend, and to date it has earned nearly $27 million.

The original film is based on a three-minute short film that director David F. Sandberg made in his native Sweden using his own money and his own camera, and with his wife as the lead actress. The short won him a Best Director award from the film competition for which he made the film in the first place, and it got the attention of New Line Cinema, which was interested in making a feature-length version. The rest is a rags-to-riches success story.

The sequel to Lights Out does not have any dates or firm details attached to it yet, but Sandberg will be back to direct the new film. The original feature's writer, Eric Heisserer, will also write the sequel, and James Wan will once again serve as an executive producer.
