Liam Hemsworth Signs On for 'Independence Day' Sequel
by Andy Neuenschwander
Looks like Liam Hemsworth already has his post-"The Hunger Games" job lined up.
According to THR, Hemsworth has been cast in the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day," along with newcomer Jessie Usher.
Details are scarce, but Hemsworth is rumored to be playing a relative to Bill Pullman's character, perhaps a nephew. We would bet good money that he'll be a pilot like his presidential uncle.
Usher's role, meanwhile, is a little clearer as he's all but confirmed to be playing the son of Captain Steve Hiller, Will Smith's role in the original movie. Smith himself will not be returning for the sequel, however.
Usher and Hemsworth join returning cast memeber Jeff Goldblum, who is confirmed by creator Roland Emmerich to be reprising his role of David Levinson. As for Pullman, he is rumored to be returning as well, but has not yet been confirmed.
Interestingly, this sets up a next generation of sorts in terms of characters, but includes none of the younger cast members from the original movie, such as James Duval's Miguel. However, none of those supporting actors went on to be particularly well-known, so they might still be in the picture but aren't being talked about.
