Will 'Lethal Weapon' Movie Reboot Follow TV Series Revival?

Theatrical reboots of classic movies have not fared so well at the box office lately - we're looking at you, Ghostbusters - and it remains to be seen whether the upcoming rash of rebooted TV versions of theatrical movies has better luck. When Fox airs its series version of Lethal Weapon in the fall, the owners of the franchise may be hedging their bets and holding out the possibility of a theatrical reboot, as well.

At the Television Critics Association press tour this week, the series' producer Justin Lin said that the idea of a movie reboot of the franchise is still floating around. He stressed, though, that his own attention was fixed squarely on his TV project.

"The feature side were very gracious and let us extend the series for television," said Lin. "Right now the focus is 100 percent on the television series."

The possibility of a new Lethal Weapon movie will depend upon the reception of the TV series.Specifically, the big question is whether or not new stars Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford can effectively take over the roles made famous by Danny Glover and Mel Gibson in the film franchise. If the TV series manages to win a big audience, then it sounds as if a theatrical version of the project will be very much on the table.
