'Les Miserables' Director 'Discouraged' Anne Hathaway's Weight Loss
by Shannon KeirnanAnne Hathaway, who is already getting multiple award nods for her role of chapped-lip, haunted Fantine in “Les Miserables,” also stirred up more than nominations over her weight loss regimen for the role—that is, starvation.
The 29-year-old actress lost 25 pounds off of her already teeny-tiny frame, by eating… well, just about nothing.
But don’t shake your finger at director Tom Hooper for letting her do something so damaging to her body.
"To be honest, I thought she was going further than she should, and I tried to discourage her," Hooper said of her weight loss.
Hathaway admits, "Tom didn't like what I was doing, but he understood why I was doing it. No one liked what I was doing. By the end, people were hugging me, and they would get emotional because I felt so frail."
In self-defense, Hathaway adds, “I see the sort of work that people like Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet can do, and I want to do that level of work so badly. But I don’t believe I’m as gifted as them. So the only thing I can control is how hard I work at it—how much do I commit to it? How far will I take it?”
Hathaway wasn’t the only one dropping weight for “Les Miserables.”
Co-star Hugh Jackman lost 30 pounds for his role.
"I was spending even longer in the gym--like three hours in the gym --because I needed to be as emaciated as possible, but still keep some muscle on for Jean Valjean,” Jackman said.
Meanwhile, Eddie Redmayne lucked out with his role as Marius.
"I remember sitting in rehearsals with Tom Hooper, the director, and he'd be like, 'Where is everyone?' I'd be like, 'They're all in the gym,'" Redmayne said.
“He'd be like, 'Aren't you the romantic lead? Shouldn't you—? ‘ I'm like, 'Yeah. I get to wear really smart costumes and hold a gun.'"
