Leonardo DiCaprio Unloads About His 'Deplorable' 'Django Unchained' Character
by Shannon KeirnanLeonardo DiCaprio might be getting a lot of respect for his role of bad guy Calvin Candie in “Django Unchained,” but the character was not one DiCaprio appreciated.
“He's the most deplorable human being I've ever read in a screenplay in my life. He's rotting from the inside. He was a young Louis XIV that was born into a world of entitlement and lived his life essentially owning other people and having his life dependent on other people’s lives,” DiCaprio said.
“ You have to play somebody that doesn’t even deem others as human. And you're working with other actors you respect, and you have to go in there and essentially cut them off and treat them as a subspecies to you. It was a very hard switch to make."
Even director Quentin Tarantino admits that Candie was the first of his villains he didn’t like, so DiCaprio is in good company.
The “Titanic” star does say, however, “It was an incredibly colorful character and I just that to… I had to play him…. It really takes a director like Quentin Tarantino to say, ‘Look, this is… the time period that I want to do a film about and I want to go to these extremes.’”
DiCaprio also said that, while he was uncomfortable using the controversial N-word during filming, but that his co-stars encouraged him to get into character.
“It was Sam Jackson and Jamie Foxx that said, ‘You really have to go all the way with this man.’”
DiCaprio got so into his evil persona, that when he slapped his hand on a table while filming a scene and accidentally impaled himself on a wine glass, he wasn’t prepared to stop filming.
"The choice was I supposed to go on and finish my speech or not, and then I noticed that blood was pouring everywhere. It was very interesting to see Quentin's and Jamie's reaction off screen."
Despite his dislike of Calvin Candie, DiCaprio promises audiences that “Django Unchained” is “an incredibly entertaining movie.”
