Who is Leaving 'Downton Abbey?'
by Shannon Keirnan“Downton Abbey” fans are already mourning over the loss of several main characters in the second season of the show—Sybil, who made her dramatic exit after giving birth to a daughter, and then there was Matthew Crawley, whose final moments involved a careening vehicle and a blank stare right after the birth of his son.
Babies are bad news on this show.
Now, after three seasons of scheming, manipulation, and maliciousness, audiences will be saying goodbye to lady’s maid Sarah O’Brien.
Yes, that’s right. Actress Siobhan Finneran has confirmed that she will not be returning for the fourth season of “Downton.”
"I'm not doing any more," Finneran said.
“O'Brien is a thoroughly despicable human being – that was great to play."
It’s not currently known how the calculating O’Brien will be dispatched from the show. Will she be yet another casualty on the show, whose body count is rising?
Possibly. However, O’Brien was last seen sucking up to Scottish relatives in the season finale. Will she work her way into favor, and make the transition from cool England to sunny India as the family relocates?
“Downton” representatives assure fans that the door will be left open a possible return for the self-serving O’Brien.
O’Brien has certainly left her mark on the show. She caused Cora Crawley to miscarry (the ‘her ladyship’s soap’ incident which Mr. Bates reminded her of), and she turned her crafty mind onto her former best friend and partner, Thomas Barrow--manipulating his crush on new help, Jimmy, while she worked in her nephew’s Alfred’s interest.
Luckily, British fans will still be able to see Finneran on the UK Series “The Syndicate,” playing a nurse who wins the lottery.
What do you think about the removal of O’Brien from the show? How would you prefer to see her go?
