Late-Night Hosts Go After Trump for Cyberbullying a Senator

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and other late-night variety shows taped before Tuesday night's Roy Moore election defeat, so they couldn't say much about that issue. Fortunately, Donald Trump earlier in the day gave Colbert and other late-night hosts plenty to make fun of when he shot an insulting (and allegedly sexually offensive) tweet at New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

A war of words has begun between President Donald Trump and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jordan Klepper were ready to offer their own insight during the opening monologues of their respective shows Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, Trump wrote a suggestive tweet, calling out the senator after Gillibrand urged for the president’s resignation. “Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office 'begging' for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump," the president wrote. "Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!"

“That reminds me, Melania, how’s that anti-cyberbullying going?” Colbert was quick to quip, referencing what the first lady said would be her cause in the White House, when addressing the controversial tweet on The Late Show.

Colbert also mocked White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ defense of blaming critics for having their “mind in the gutter” and interpreting the president’s tweet as a sexual innuendo. “Yeah, get your mind out of the gutter,” Colbert said as he imitated Sanders. “That’s disgusting. Now let’s go back to talking about Trump supporting a serial teen-squeezer.”
