Will 'La La Land' Dominate the Oscars?
by EG
According to a poll conducted by The Hollywood Reporter, most Americans can't name a single movie nominated this year for a Best Picture Academy Award. That's not surprising, given that the Academy tends to honor movies that most Americans haven't seen. This year, though, the favorite to win most of the major awards is a movie that most have at least heard of.
La La Land has been an awards powerhouse so far this season, totally dominating the Golden Globe awards and raking in many critics' and professional association awards, too. It has many advantages over its competitors, including a sweetly romantic story, attractive stars, catchy musical numbers, and a setting in Hollywood itself, which has to please the narcissistic side of the film industry.
But will the movie rule the Oscars the way it's ruled everything else?
As of mid-week, the statistical prognosticating website FiveThirtyEight was La La Land as the favorite to win Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress (for Emma Stone's performance). The site says, however, that Ryan Gosling is likely to lose the Best Actor competition to Casy Affleck of Manchester By The Sea.
La La Land also has a good shot at the Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song awards, as well as the awards in the editing, costuming and production design categories.
In short, the answer is yes, the Oscars overall will most likely belong to La La Land this year.
