Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone in 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2'
by EG
Comic-Con is an opportunity for studios to reveal secrets about their upcoming superhero movies in order to drum up anticipation among fans, but the reveals are often old news to fans who've been paying attention to the rumor mills. A reveal last week by the producers of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though, took most by suprise.
A new trailer and footage reel released at the convention last week confirmed that Kurt Russell will play the father of Chris Pratt's Star-Lord/Peter Quill character. In a further twist, Russell's character was revealed to be Ego, the Living Planet, rather than the Spartoi Emperor J'son, who is Quill's father in the comics. So Russell's inclusion shakes things up by changing the identity of Quill's father and giving Ego a human incarnation. Pretty big news.
In somewhat lesser news, the trailer also revealed that Sylvester Stallone will play a role in the movie, although the identity of his character is still unknown.
Neither the new trailer nor the new footage have been officially released by Marvel yet because, as director James Gunn explained, the footage is not yet in a finished state and isn't, in the opinion of the studio, ready for consumption by the general public.
