Kristen Stewart's Next Role: Psychic Superhero in 'Akira?'

It was only about a week ago that we learned that Garrett Hedlund, who starred in "Tron: Legacy," would be playing the lead in the live-action movie adaptation of the manga/anime "Akira." Now an offer has gone out for the female lead, and it would appear that the studio's first choice is none other than Kristen Stewart!

Stewart is already having a big week with the Hollywood premiere of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I" yesterday and the nationwide release this weekend. To add to that busy week, Collider is reporting that an offer is out for Stewart to play the role of Kei, a resistance fighter in the futuristic New Manhattan who has telekinetic powers. Neat.

Though Stewart would still be playing a love interest (Kei gets involved with Hedlund's character, Kaneda), this is yet another departure from the norm for Stewart. If she accepts, this would be her second action-heavy role following her turn in "Snow White and the Huntsman," which, judging from the epic trailer, involves a lot of swordplay, horseback riding, and armor-wearing.

The offer also makes sense in terms of the chemistry between Hedlund and Stewart: the two are also set to star in the adaptation of "On the Road."

As of yet, there is no word on how the Stewart camp is responding to the offer. But with Hedlund on board and offers out to Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter for other starring roles, this could end up being an interesting cast with both veterans and young "it" actors.
