NAACP Will Honor Kid Rock, Despite Confederate Flag Controversy

NAACP Will Honor Kid Rock, Despite Confederate Flag Controversy Thanks to his fondness for the Confederate flag, Kid Rock is stirring up controversy with the NAACP.

Michigan-based Kid Rock is expected to be honored by the Detroit chapter of the NAACP during the Freedom Fund Dinner in May.

However, his common usage of The Confederate flag is causing objection and protest. Several members of the NAACP are boycotting the dinner. They contend that Rock should not receive the Great Expectations Award.

As for the flag, objectors like Adolph Mongo, leader of Detroiters for Progress, say it’s a symbol of hatred and bigotry.

“It’s a slap in the face for anyone who fought for civil rights in this country," Mongo said.

In 2008, Kid Rock admitted to the Guardian that the flag has some scars.

He holds that it’s just fun, and reminds him of being a product of 70’s-Southern rock.

“Plus it just looks cool,” he said.

The Detroit chapter of the NAACP, believes that Kid Rock’s commitment to the people of Detroit trumps any fondness he has for the Dixie flag.

“(He) has consistently lifted up the Great Expectations of many persons … concerning the future of the city," leader Donnel R. White said.
