Kevin Spacey Will Go to Court Over Sexual Assault Charges

Kevin Spacey might not be taking sexual assault charges against him seriously enough. After posting a bizarre video in his own defense and having his lawyer argue that Spacey need not be present for an arraignment hearing next week, Spacey is being forced by the judge to show up at the hearing, and the police say they have video evidence that the sexual assault took place. Kevin Spacey must appear for his arraignment in the case of alleged sexual assault, a Massachusetts judge ordered Monday, according to court documents obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

The disgraced two-time Oscar-winning actor requested to waive his right to appear Jan. 7 in Nantucket District Court, according to a motion filed by his legal team. Nantucket District Court Judge Thomas Barrett denied that request but gave no additional explanation.

Both Spacey and his attorneys asked the judge to allow the actor to skip the proceeding because he lives outside the state and "my presence will amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case," according to the motion. Spacey also states in the document that he intended to enter a not guilty plea.

Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Michael K. Giardino argued in prosecutors' response that Spacey’s appearance is required at the arraignment under rules for criminal case procedure, court documents stated.

It was announced Christmas Eve that the former House of Cards star had been charged with one count of indecent assault and battery stemming from an alleged assault that took place in July 2016.

The alleged victim was 18 at the time when he claims Spacey assaulted him after getting him drunk at the Club Car Restaurant on Nantucket. The alleged victim is being represented by renowned Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian. Prosecutors say there is video evidence of the alleged assault. Spacey's lawyers say it shows nothing.

The same day it was announced the actor would be charged, Spacey broke his public silence of more than a year and released a video, in which he appears to defend himself while in character as his Netflix House of Cards alter ego, Frank Underwood.

"My confidence grows each day that soon enough, you will know the full truth," the actor says in the video that runs a little longer than three minutes and has more than 8.3 million views.
