Kevin Smith Auctioning Off Props to Fund Horror Film 'Red State'

Kevin Smith had a great idea: why bother going through movie studios when he can just distribute a movie on his own? So Smith went to Sundance with the film and sold it to himself.

Then he realized that distributing a movie is seriously expensive.

Smith planned a "Red State" nationwide tour, where he would screen the film for fans willing to pay for expensive tickets. That doesn't seem to have gotten him all the way to his financial goal, so now Smith has hatched a new plan: sell some stuff.

This weekend, fans and collectors will have the opportunity to bid on props and costumes from Kevin Smith's many movies in an auction to help fun the distribution of "Red State." On Saturday (April 9th), the items will be on display at the Wiltern in Los Angeles for prospective buyers (or people who just want to see the stuff) to check them out. Then on Sunday (April 10th), the actual auction will take place at the Pasadena Convention Conference Center, room 106.

Among the many items up for auction are a set of angel wings worn by Ben Affleck in "Dogma" (awesome), Smith's Bluntman costume from "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (also awesome), and a cash register from "Clerks II" (I would prefer a prop from the original "Clerks," but still cool). All in all, there are 341 lots to be sold.

With any luck, the auction will raise enough money to at least distribute "Red State" in a limited release, and Kevin Smith won't have to sell a kidney.
