Katy Perry to Play Super Bowl Halftime Show

Katy Perry is taking her talents to Phoenix!

The "Roar" singer has been tapped by the NFL to play the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show early next year, according to a report from Billboard. The game has been set to play at the home of the Arizona Cardinals in Phoenix, so at least Katy will have an air-conditioned dome to perform in.

Perry was in consideration for the gig for a while, alongside Coldplay and Rihanna. However, Rihanna got into a bit of a tiff with CBS when they removed her song "Run This Town" from their NFL programming following the news of Ray Rice punching his fiancee on video. CBS took out the song because of Rihanna's association with Chris Brown, who beat her to the point of hospitalization in a famous assault case a few years back.

Rihanna disagreed vocally with the decision, so chances are neither side was particularly gung-ho about her taking the job.

Interestingly, the NFL was floating around an idea this year to essentially charge musical artists for the privilege of playing the Super Bowl halftime show. Specifically, they were asking musicians to "contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig."

Perry appeared just last weekend on ESPN's College Gameday and definitively said that she wouldn't be doing that. "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl," she said.

So, either the NFL has backtracked on that (admittedly dumb) idea, or Perry decided to cough up some cash. Either way, there might be more cotton candy on stage at the Super Bowl this year than being eaten in the stands.
