Elle magazine tweeted this week that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are splitting up. Fans weren't happy to discover that the tweet was fake news and a stunt to draw attention. Read on to find out what was really going on.

Elle magazine provoked backlash by tweeting a link to a fake story with the headline “Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are splitting up,” that instead led to a page encouraging voter registration.

“This is trash nonsense,” wrote “Bad Feminist” author Roxane Gay. “Who do you think you are reaching with this? Guess what? One can be civic minded and interested in celebrity gossip.”
Journo Yashar Ali tweeted, “When a random tweeter did this it was clever but now you’re just stealing their tweet and also spreading fake news.”
