With all the hype and advertising (and his episode attracting the highest ratings in over a year), did the “Saturday Night Live” writing staff step up their game in anticipation of his arrival?

I would say they did. The even brought back several of “SNL”’s biggest stars: Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Candice Bergen, Andy Samberg, Martin Short, Chevy Chase, and Dan Aykroyd.

In addition to the actors, they also revived some favorite characters and skits from days gone by. Steve Martin and Dan Aykryord donned their old 70s threads and played the two wild and ca-razy guys, The Festrunk Brothers. In addition (and in the same skit), Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg revived their characters from the ‘Dick in a Box’ music video that went viral a few years back.

Timberlake went on to revive his character of a giant dancing food item. This time around, he was a giant tofu, and sang for people to bring it on down to Vegan Ville.

They also brought back the “Moet & Chandon” ad, which featured retired porn stars doing advertising in hopes to score free products. Justin Timberlake slid in and out of the scene, and ultimately made it quite enjoyable.

And for anyone who is a Stefon fan, he made another appearance in the Weekend Update segment, and was a joy as always.

Other than that, the show was kind of mediocre. They did another installment of Maine Justice, which wasn’t funny the first time around. The premise is that everyone in the court is very Cajun, making jokes referencing Cajun culture, but it’s set in Maine, the complete opposite in terms of culture. One of the defendants is always a “normal” Maine resident, and the other is very Cajun. There are only so many alligator and Andouille jokes you can do, and I think they used them up the first time around.

And an actual fresh sketch, ‘Tales of Sober Caligula’, features Caligula, known for his orgies and general debauchery deciding to go straight and jump on the wagon towards recovery, much to his followers’ dismay. And much to my dismay, the sketch wasn’t very funny at all.

All in all, Justin Timberlake is a very funny man, and a very solid performer. However, it was proven that the writers of ‘SNL’ should stick to what they know works, and keep Timberlake reviving his old characters, rather than force him into awkward new situations.

Still, bonus points for reuniting so many classic, legendary cast members and hosts.
