Just In Time For The 2012 Olympics, 'Make It Or Break It' To End
by Sean ComerIt's rare anymore that it can be said, but here's a series that's ending perhaps precisely where it should.
ABC Family made it official Thursday: the eight-episode third season of "Make It or Break It" will close the series. The series has spent the past three years charting the progression of fictional young girls hoping to earn spots on the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics squad.
"MIOBI nation. We all love you so much. And we are, very sadly, three weeks away from the series finale of #miobi," tweeted creator Holly Sorensen this afternoon. ABC Family has already begun centering hype for upcoming episodes on build-up to the May 14 finale. Other new, unscripted shows reportedly being rolled out soon as possible successors include "Bunheads", "Beverly Hills Nannies" and "Baby Daddy".
The current season, in keeping with a timeline to parallel real hopefuls' roads to London, began with Payson (Ayla Kells), Kaylie (Josie Loren) and Lauren (Cassie Scerbo) at the Rocky Mountain Gymnastics Training Center anticipating the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics. They've so far coped with a new coach, new teammates and unwanted tensions piled atop Olympic Trial pressures.
The 2010 series premiere garned a 2.5 rating that's impressive for a smaller cable network like ABC Family, but the 2011 second-season opener slipped to a 1.83, then to a 1.57 for the final season's premiere. Despite the sagging ratings, its been a six-time Teen Choice Award nominee.
