Watch: Joss Whedon Releases New Film via Vimeo
by EG"Avengers" director Joss Whedon is hard at work on the sequel to his superhero blockbuster, but the always-hard-working writer/director/producer never seems to be happy having only one project going at a time. His latest writing credit is "In Your Eyes," a supernatural romance that's taking an unconventional distribution route.
The movie was produced by Whedon's Bellwether Pictures, which also developed last year's adaptation of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." "In Your Eyes" is about former childhood friends who reconnect and kindle a new romance in adulthood; the twist is that they do it long distance, via shared paranormal visions.
The concept feels a lot like "Ghost" in the Internet age, where a sort of psychic Skype allows a connection between two people who are unable to be together in the physical world. Female lead actress Zoe Kazan has described the film as "Joss Whedon does Nicolas Sparks," hinting at the sweet sentimentality of the story.
The most unique aspect of the film, which debuted last week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is the way that it's being distributed. Instead of being released theatrically or direct to video, the movie can be purchased online directly for a low price. It's available digitally through Vimeo, and it can be purchased for $5 at the film's website.
