Jon Stewart's Replacement for 'The Daily Show' Announced: Who is Trevor Noah?
by Shannon Keirnan
Fans of "The Daily Show" already know that there is no substitution for the incomparable Jon Stewart. Yet, sadly, two months ago, Stewart announced that he would be leaving the comedic news show, and a suitable replacement had to be found whether we liked it or not.
And now one has. 31-year-old Trevor Noah will be taking over Stewart's position behind the news desk when Stewart makes his exit later this year.
It is a major promotion for the young comedian. Noah has appeared on the show only three times.
Biracial Noah hails from South Africa and speaks six languages. He grew up in Soweto, and, as the son of a black Xhosa mother and white Swiss father, had to keep his parentage secret. Biracial unions were not allowed during the apartheid era.
"He brings such a unique worldview and a deep understanding of human nature, which makes his comedy so insightful. He's truly a student of the world," said Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless. "We talked to women. We talked to men. We found in Trevor the best person for the job... You don't hope to find the next Jon Stewart - there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different."
"You don't believe it for the first few hours," Noah explained, of hearing the news. "You need a stiff drink."
Stewart, whose 16 years on the show created a major hit for the network, has expressed his support of Noah.
"I'm thrilled for the show and for Trevor," he said in a statement. "He's a tremendous comic and talent that we've loved working with."
Noah says Stewart has also offered him some personal words of support.
"He told me, 'I was where you were when I took over the show. Nobody knew me. I was just starting out, finding my voice, and that's when I was handed this seat.'"
What do you think of the choice?
