John Oliver Returns with Scathing Attack on Nunes
by EG
Returning from a two-week hiatus, John Oliver's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took up some of the recent developments in what the host has been calling "stupid Watergate" — Trump's baseless claim that Obama wiretapped him last year.
Oliver reflected on how Devin Nunes "initially sounded" like he had evidence to back up Trump's claim. "But it quickly unraveled as Nunes conceded the surveillance was routine, appeared to be completely legal, occurred after the election, and may not have even targeted Trump or his transition team, but rather foreign individuals discussing the transition."
"Trump feels vindicated by dubious sources all the time," said Oliver, joking. “We don't need to invest in clean energy. It says right here on this cup that ‘America Runs on Dunkin.'"
The Last Week Tonight host brought up Nunes' conflicts of interest and looked into what he actually discovered.
"Devin took what appears to be an unnecessary trip to tell what appears to be unimportant news to what may have been the source of the news itself. So what Nunes brought to light has turned out to be a bunch of smoke and mirrors as convoluted as it is pointless — truly, it is the Now You See Me of revelations," Oliver said, referencing the magic movie.
