'Glee' Creator Ryan Murphy Casts Oscar Winner Jessica Lange as Lead in 'American Horror Story'

'Glee' Creator Ryan Murphy Casts Oscar Winner Jessica Lange as Lead in 'American Horror Story' There's a first time for everything, and for Jessica Lange it's starring in a TV series. The two-time Oscar-winning actress is set to star in the much-anticipated FX show "American Horror Story."

The show is being developed by "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy, hence the anticipation: everything the man touches from here on in will be watched closely by those in the industry as they wait to see if it's as big a hit at "Glee."

Of course, having the Oscar-winning Jessica Lange on to star won't hurt the show's chances either. Lange is a genuine Hollywood legend, with a career that included role sin "Tottsie," "King Kong," "Crimes of the Heart" and "Cape Fear." She has won two Academy Awards (for "Tootsie" and "Blue Sky"), so it's unlikely she'd be hopping aboard a series if it didn't show real promise.

Lange has been moving toward TV lately, starring in a pair of TV movies ("Sybil" and "Grey Gardens," which won her an Emmy). However, this is the first regular episodic TV series appearance of her career, so that's a pretty good indication that she likes the script.

Speaking which, nobody really knows what this show is about. We have descriptions of the characters from the casting breakdowns--Connie Britton of "Friday Night Lights" will play another lead, the strong wife of a "sensitive therapist"--but the plot details are under wraps. We do know that Lange will play the neighbor of the two leads, and that her role is being greatly expanded now that a big name is occupying it.

The pilot is being developed for FX, but we have yet to know whether or not it will be picked up. Given that it has Murphy and Lange behind it, though, the chances are looking pretty good.
