Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons Join 'Superman/Batman' Movie Opposite Ben Affleck
by Andy NeuenschwanderLadies and gentlemen, your next Lex Luthor is here.
Jesse Eisenberg has officially been cast in the upcoming Superman/Batman movie in the role of Superman's arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, putting him opposite Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck.
Variety confirms the news, and also confirms that Batman's butler Alfred has another famous veteran actor playing him: Jeremy Irons will take on the role formerly played by Michael Caine in the previous Batman trilogy.
Eisenberg started in smaller indie films like "Adventureland" before his breakout role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network," a role for which he received an Oscar nomination.
Since then, Eisenberg has gone on to star in larger-budget productions like the magician heist flick "Now You See Me," but this role is by far his biggest to date.
The choice is an interesting one, as Lex Luthor has traditionally been portrayed as older than Superman. In the original movies, Gene Hackman took on the role. It's possible that this choice may have been influenced by TV's "Smallville."
The movie has been making headlines from the beginning of the casting process, as Ben Affleck was one of the first—and also the most controversial—casting choices in his role as Batman himself.
Later, the production added Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, setting DC Comics and Warner Bros up for a future Justice League movie.
The new additions to the cast join returning "Man of Steel" actors Henry Cavill (as Superman), Amy Adams (as Lois Lane), Lawrence Fishburne (as Perry White) and Diane Lane (as Martha Kent).
