Jennifer Lawrence Enjoyed Shooting 'Red Sparrow' Torture Scenes

Jennifer Lawrence knows how to stir up controversy. In commenting on the torture scenes in her spy thriller Red Sparrow, which have been criticized for their depiction of sexual violence against women, she admitted that she actually had fun filming them. Read on for her explanation.

Jennifer Lawrence shocked fans with her performance in spy thriller Red Sparrow, with some critics accusing director Francis Lawrence of pushing the actress too hard while shooting tough scenes for the violent, sexually charged film.

But the 27-year-old, who plays a former prima ballerina who becomes a spy, has made light of the controversy, revealing that one particular torture scene with co-star Joel Edgerton was actually “pretty fun” to film.

It is the fourth time the star has teamed up with Francis Lawrence, having previously worked with him on three Hunger Games movies

She said: “In Red Sparrow, the torture scenes were pretty fun. Joel pretended to be tickled by the skin grafting machine that was peeling his skin off"

There was blood everywhere and he was like, ‘Hee hee hee hee’, so that was funny. I was basically being tortured with a NERF paddle so it wasn’t that bad.

She added: “I’m good at keeping secrets, but I’m not good at doing things that are hard or make me uncomfortable physically and I’m very lazy. I like at least 10 hours of sleep and I don’t have a strong work ethic so I don’t think I’d be a very good spy.”

Lawrence said she did four months of ballet for three hours a day to prepare for the role: “I am not, as the director says, what you call a ‘homework actress’. It was miserable, but I think we got enough done that that part of the movie works.
