Jeff Goldblum: 'Independence Day' Sequel Is 'Brewing'
by Andy NeuenschwanderWe might end up seeing Jeff Goldblum doling out computer viruses to aliens sometime soon.
The actor revealed that a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster "Independence Day" is "brewing," and he thinks it has a good chance of actually coming together.
"I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon," Goldblum said in an interview with Time.
This isn't the first time that rumors of a sequel have come up; not by a long shot. Goldblum admits that the whole thing is a bit "nebulous" as of yet, but he seems confident that it's being taken seriously.
"They’re still talking about it and I’ve heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and 'Oh, there’s a scripting coming in' — maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it’s brewing," he said.
The last rumors that were floating around said that the movie could happen, but almost definitely without Will Smith. We have to assume that's still the case; it seems that Smith is practically done with acting, at least certainly with the big blockbuster movies.
One also has to wonder how the movie would translate to modern audiences. The typical action film has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years, especially since the phenomenon that was "The Dark Knight." Movies have more grit and realism these days, so would a movie that ended with an unlikely computer virus plot hold up?
Ah, who are we kidding? We'll take it, and our only regret will be the loss of drunken Randy Quaid.
