Jay-Z Won't Say 'B*tch' Anymore Because of Blue Ivy
by Andy NeuenschwanderSometimes parents have to sacrifice a lot for their kids. Rapper, music mogul and new father Jay-Z is sacrificing a little less.
A poem written by Jay-Z is circulating the Web, and it was written in dedication to his newborn daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. In it, he notes how he behaved in the past and makes an interesting promise for the future. Here's the poem in its entirety:
"Before I got in the game, made a change, and got rich
I didn’t think hard about using the word bitch
I rapped, I flipped it, I sold it, I lived it
Now with my daughter in this world I curse those that give it.
No man will degrade her, or call her name.
I'm so focused on your future, the degradation has passed.
I wish you wealth, health and insight. Forever young you may pass.
Blue Ivy Carter, my angel"
Translation: Jay-Z won't be using the word "bitch" any more in his lyrics.
But will that work? Jay-Z has, as he noted in the poem, more or less made a career off the word (among others). What would his hit "99 Problems" be like without the word? "I got 99 problems but a spouse or significant other ain't one?"
One would have to assume that if the HOVA wants to drop "bitch" from his musical vocabulary, he would probably also want to drop "hoe," "trick," and other derogatory terms for women. Will he take that step as well? Will he be one of very few rappers to avoid the degradation of women altogether in his music from here on in?
Or maybe he'll retire from rap (again) and not have to worry about any of it. In any case, keep an eye and/or ear out for any new music coming out from Jay-Z, and see if he makes good on this promise.
